If you wanna realize better system performance, not only need to optimize all registry settings. However there are still many parts of windows system that can be optimized in order to obtain better system performance.

One of them is remove or disable unused services in MSCONFIG. Not all services are needed for you, It’s can just make your computer sluggish, so if you don’t need certain service, it would be nice if you disable it.

note : turn off services from system configuration utility like MSCONFIG isn’t proper. The proper way is turn off it from Services Management Tools like Control panel or services.msc

How to Enter “services.msc”?

  • From start menu → run → type “services.msc” with no quote.
  • Or from explorer C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\ Programs\ Administrative Tools, Click on file with label “services”

On “services.msc”, you be able to modify the value of services startup type to manual, automatic or disabled for change the settings, you just need to right click on a service and then select Properties to modify the startup type. But, there are a few service that need other services to run properly, so you need know what needs to be turned off and what needs to be stay on default.

In “services.msc”, there are many windows services needed for doing any function and there are also unused services. Just unused services that you can disable safely. Here are Some Services which can be turned off safely :

  1. Alerter
    This service oftentimes isn’t used. This is needed for administrative alerts over a network for administrative necessity.
  2. Automatic Updates
    This is used for downloading and installing Windows updates. If It’s unneeded, turn off it.This service needs other services like Event Log, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and the Cryptographics Services.
  3. Computer Browser
    It’s needed to list entire computers in a network and provides this details to other computer. It’s will make browsing on the network quicker, actually this service isn’t needed unless your computer in a certain network. You allowed to disable it if you don’t have a network.
  4. Distributed Link Tracking Client
    You just need it if your file system is NTFS. If you use FAT32 file system, you can turn off this service.
  5. Fast User Switching Compatibility
    If you just own an user account, you actually don’t need this service, so disable this function is better. This service enables to leave your application that have been working with no need to storing your data.
  6. Help and Support
    If you disable this service, Windows Help and Support center will not be appear anymore. If you think this is unneeded, switch it to manual.
  7. IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service
    This service needed to burn CD-ROM’s from Windows Explorer. This is useless if you don’t have a CD-burner, Furthermore, if you have a CD burner software you need to turn off this service (at least turn it to manual). It’s will makes troubles if combined with other burning software.
  8. Indexing Service
    This service isn’t needed for you so you can turn it off for better system performance.
  9. Messenger
    I don’t know what it’s exactly for, but I advise to disable this service.
  10. Print Spooler
    It’s Necessary for printing. If you don’t have a printer, turn it off is better.
  11. Remote Registry
    This is intended for external users to modify the registry keys through network connection. This is actually not safe, external users may be crackers who wanna destroy your system. It’s suggested to be disabled.
  12. Routing and Remote Access
    If you don’t need to dial in by others into your computer, turn it off.
  13. System Restore Service
    This service used to restore your system to previous back up if something did goes wrong. This is usually utilized by viruses to restore themselves although they have deleted. Turn it off will makes big changes as your system performance will not spent just for system restore.
  14. Task Scheduler
    This is lets automatic scheduled tasks work in your system. I think it isn’t needed for you so I advice to turn it off.
  15. Uninterruptible Power Supply
    It’s used to manages an UPS that connected to your computer, If you don’t have an UPS, disable it.

    There are as much as 25 windows services in Windows XP Professional SP3 that can be safely disabled. They are not useful in majority of user environments and disabling them can liberate a great amount of RAM resources.
